Steve Watkins exemplifies the legal profession’s ideals of public service both in his law practice and in his personal life. As a lawyer, Steve Watkins has maintained a law office in the Chicago’s south side neighborhood of Park Manor for close to 20 years. He has provided access to local quality legal representation for countless neighborhood residents. The neighborhood character of his office has allowed for residents to see his car parked in front of his office and his shutters open, often late at night, and walk in for a consultation – many of which have been pro bono. Through his patience and skillful way of communicating, Steve Watkins has furthered community members' understanding of and confidence in the rule of law and the justice system by providing straight forward, accurate advice and excellent legal representation.
In addition, there have been several aspiring attorneys and young lawyers, many of whom are minorities, who have been told to make sure they stop by “the office” to discuss their legal aspirations with Mr. Watkins. Understanding the importance of helping the legal profession become more diverse, Steve Watkins never misses the opportunity to encourage these young people to pursue a career in law.
Mr. Watkins’ law office has participated in community development activities, sponsoring several baseball teams in the Jackie Robinson West (“JRW”) little league organization, whose mission is to bring children into a structured program environment intensely supported by adult volunteers where the values of leadership, team work and self-discipline are strongly emphasized. Mr. Watkins also coached in JRW for 10 years while maintaining his law practice. Additionally Mr. Watkins’ law office has provided meeting rooms and office resources for various community organizations. His law office has also employed several community members.
Steve Watkins is currently a member of the Cook County Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Through bar association involvement, Steve Watkins has participated in the evaluation of judicial candidates.
Outside the legal profession, Steve Watkins demonstrates his commitment to community service and his family. He has used his skills in leadership positions in a wide range of organizations. Mr. Watkins has served on the Board of Directors of non-profit organizations including the South Side YMCA and Casa Esperanza, a shelter for women and children. Additionally, Mr. Watkins was elected to serve on the Local School Council of Chicago Public Schools Keller Gifted Center as an LSC Member for 12 years and as LSC Chairman for 10 years. Mr. Watkins also formed the Keller Athletic Association in order to foster a structured athletic program at Keller.
Steve Watkins is a tireless advocate for the advancement of educational and professional opportunities for members of the African American community. He has been an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. for over 20 years and is its current Tenth District Representative to the Supreme Council. Additionally, Steve Watkins has been an active member of 100 Black Men of Chicago, Inc., an affiliate of of 100 Black Men of America, Inc, since 2005 and is its current General Counsel. 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is an organization committed to mentoring and the intellectual development of minority youth.
Steve Watkins received his undergraduate degree from Howard University in Washington D.C. and his Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University School of Law.

As an arbitrator for over 10 years with the Circuit Court of Cook County's Mandatory Arbitration Program, Steve Watkins has also performed the function of a third party neutral in a nonrepresentational role helping parties to resolve a dispute or other matter.
